Mountainsmith has long made its products for the "midweight-to-heavy but extra-sturdy" segment of the outdoor market. That's why your classic Tour or Day lumbar pack from 1995 is probably still in pretty good condition. But I generally lean toward lighter stuff these days -- not super-ultralight and fragile, just slightly less bombproof and a lot less heavy. Mountainsmith's new Mountainlight series caters to ultralight enthusiasts like me who may have felt left out in the past.The Mountainlight series is still sturdy -- no easy-to-puncture, abrasion-prone sil-nylon here. Fabrics tend to be ripstop and midweight. And the Mountainlight line still has the unsurpassed Mountainsmith guarantee. But the Scream drops a couple of pounds by skipping some of the heavier traditional Mountainsmith backpack elements.
